Your central air and heating system in your house is literally the heartbeat of your home. It keeps it cool in Summer, and warm and cozy during the winter months. When it’s not running at peak performance you’ll notice increased energy bills, more dust, and other more costly issues may arise. These are just a few reason why regular maintenance is so important.
Here at JMS Air and Heat we think Spring is the best time to ensure your system is in tip top shape as we head into Summer. It’s a great time to catch up on some overdue maintenance tasks for your air conditioning and heating system.
In this article we wanted to point out four easy tips to help you keep your A/C system running smoothly all summer long.
Tip 1: Change the air filter every 30 days
We don’t think you can change your air filter often enough. However, in order to keep your air conditioning system running smoothly all summer, it is important to change the air filter at least every 30 days. Even if you are using a filter that says up to 90 days, it should be changed monthly. Dust from your home builds up in the filter causing your system to have to work extra hard to circulate air through your home. Changing your filter often will help to remove any dirt, carbon particles, or other debris that may be building up in the unit and causing it to not function at its best.
Air conditioning systems work best when the filter is clean, so if it starts to look dirty, take a moment to swap it out for a brand new filter.
Tip 2: Have your system professionally serviced and cleaned once a year
One of the best ways to keep your air conditioning system running smoothly all summer is to have it professionally cleaned. With JMS Air and Heat we can put you on a maintenance schedule and we’ll take care of this for you. Keeping your system cleaned will remove any dirt, dust, and other debris in your system that may be causing problems with your unit. By having your AC system professionally cleaned, you’ll also be able to avoid any costly repairs or replacements down the road.
Tip 3: Program your thermostat
Another step to keeping your air conditioning running smoothly all summer is to program your thermostat appropriately. This will help you set a comfortable temperature in your home and avoid the need to adjust the temperature frequently. Be sure to set your thermostat at least two degrees lower in the day than at night, to avoid overheating. Also, be sure to open windows and doors when you are outside for a breeze or when it is hot out, respectively, as this will help circulate air and keep your home cooler.
Tip 4: Keep an Eye on the Refrigerant Levels
When it comes to your AC unit, keeping an eye on the refrigerant levels is one of the most important things you can do to keep it running smoothly all summer long. This is anohter thing that JMS Air and Heat keep an eye on when we maintain your system. The refrigerant levels in your system can drop quickly in hot weather, and if your system isn’t kept properly lubricated, it could start making noises, or worse, not working at all. Make sure you hire a professional to keep and eye on the refrigerant levels and to top off if needed.
By following these simple tips, you can help keep your a/c system running smoothly all summer long and help avoid costly repairs down the road.
